A Brief History About the Rolex Datejust

The Rolex Datejust, introduced in 1945, is one of Rolex's most iconic and enduring models. Created to mark the brand's 40th anniversary, it was a groundbreaking innovation in the watchmaking world as it became the first automatic wristwatch to feature a date function that automatically changes at midnight. This revolutionary design set a new standard for wristwatches and remains a key feature of modern timepieces today.

The first model, Reference 4467, was exclusively crafted in 18K yellow gold, and its production continued through the 1950s. Over the years, the Datejust evolved, with new variations introduced in stainless steel, two-tone, and full gold models, and with different bezel styles such as the smooth, fluted, and engine-turned bezels.

The Datejust's signature feature is its Cyclops lens—a magnifying lens over the date window—introduced in 1953, making the date even more legible. Additionally, the Jubilee bracelet, another hallmark of the Datejust, was created in 1945 to celebrate Rolex's anniversary and became an integral part of the model's design.
